Or The Difference Between OTC & Prescription Medications.
I've talked about my insomnia before, but as a refresher, I've had insomnia as long as I can remember. I used to self-medicate with OTC things to make me drowsy before I finally switched to prescription medication about 4 or 5 years ago. The problem with sleeping pills is that you easily build up a tolerance to them and sooner rather than later, you reach the 'safe threshold'. You either stay on that medication at that dosage and try to make it work or you switch meds and start all over again.
I no longer have insurance and haven't yet applied for the government subsidized drug plan, so when I ran out of pills on Thursday, I just thought, 'well I'll go back to some OTC things and use those until I apply/get approved for coverage'.
WRONG. So wrong. I spent last night sleeping in 45 min. to 1 hour shifts. Being awake for 2 hours and then taking another catnap. I knew it wouldn't be as good as my sleeping pills, but I didn't realize it would be that bad. Now I'm just a shambling, groggy imitation of a human being.
Because of this, I won't be attending the Toronto meetup today, which totally sucks. My plan to adopt Missy Pants' dachshunds will have to be put on hold. And I'm definitely filling out that application as soon as my brain starts functioning again.
