so, i forgot that SCOTUS lists all oral arguments online for you reading and listening pleasure. today i decided to listen to the OA for Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the current abortion case on the docket. i implore you all to listen to it. i loved it for a few reasons: 1) it was really interesting to hear how oral argument proceeds beyond the sound bytes we here in the news; 2) yes, all of these folks are attorneys, but it was surprisingly easy to digest outside of the occasional legal term that i don’t know as a layperson; 3) i have such a great deal of respect for the Justices (more than before) - they are all so astute and sharp, and it’s cool to see their personalities come out as they question the attorneys arguing before them. this particular case was riveting to listen to, probably because it is something i’m so very concerned about, and also because there is a sense of urgency around this case that you can hear in the audio. justices Kagan, Sotomayor, Breyer, and Ginsburg (unsurprisingly) bring the fire in their line of questioning and really get at what we all know is the unspoken truth about the legislation in TX. i’m not a legal professional, but i was rapt then entire time. please, take the time to listen to it, i don’t think you’ll regret it.
