It’s time to get back into shape.

I’ve been really bad about being active these past 8 months. And now, it’s time to get back at it because I’m winded when I walk up a flight of stairs...

I’m looking for some recommendations for at home low impact cardio. I used to make fun of my Mom when I was a kid for doing Jane Fonda tapes. but now that I’m older, wiser and less of a teenage asshole, I can appreciate why these tapes were popular - they are low impact, set to fun music and simply get you moving. Case in point, my Mom used to do Body Electric every morning (on PBS at 6:30 am, even in Canada :-).

Two years ago, I was having knee pain and my doctor recommended light weight resistance training. I remembered that Body Electric was basically that - and now they have digital videos for sale so I spent $40 buying a couple of them. For serious, after 8 months of doing this almost everyday for 25 minutes, I was the strongest I’ve ever been - I could do 15 full pushups on my toes, something I had never been able to do EVER. Margaret Richards (the creator) emphasizes good form, working to your limit (but taking a break if you need) and how if you keep at it, you will get so much stronger. It’s super body positive - she never talks about losing weight, only getting stronger but routinely points out that if you DO want to lose weight you should do some cardio. She recommends 30 min brisk walk every day. FYI there are no longer rolled down socks and 80s hair, but many of her exercises are the same:

Also, there’s something about seeing a 60+ women looking so STRONG that’s really inspiring and motivating.

I’m looking for something similar but for cardio. Something that I can easily do at home and not body sham-ey (seriously, I’m not interested in any aerobic where someone talk about “Slim those thighs! Get rid of the muffin top”, I’m so over it. ). In conjunction with re-starting the weights, I’m going to start Yoga with Adrienne (I got the recommendation here!), I just need some cardio to round it out. I was thinking of just getting some Richard Simmons “Sweating to the Oldies” videos - has anyone done those? I like the fact that Simmons always had all kinds of different body types in his videos.

Here’s the Jane Fonda video my Mom always did:

And here’s a hilarious Jazzercise video compilations, just because it’s amazing:
