So I've had a break/tear/crack in my nail for several weeks now. I'm trying desperately to give my nail time to grow, as the break, when I first noticed it, was in the middle of my nailbed. I've managed to give it time to grow out some, thank God, and I'm hoping to allow it a bit more time. I'm not sure what to do at this point. (I know it doesn't look too bad now [at least in this picture], as it's managed to grow out past the point when I was really getting concerned about it, but I'd still like the break to get a bit further up,preferably past the quick, before I let it tear all the way.)

The nail itself is getting kind of long... Should I trim it, so it's less likely to snag on stuff (but obviously not all the way down to wear the break is)? About two weeks ago, I coated my nails with a few layers of clear nail polish to try to give it a little more strength and keep it together. This week, I've kept a bandaid over it most of the time to avoid it snagging and pulling on things, that way it doesn't tear any more than it already has. I have no idea what I'm doing. Any advice on how I might handle this? I've had one person suggest nail polish, then another person suggested keeping the nail super hydrated, soft, and supple, which seemed like a weird way to go about it...

Please tell me you GTers have some ideas! Also, I'm totally up for any advice about how to strengthen my nails, as they've been suffering lately due to way too many encounters with the metal teeth on packing tape dispenser things.

Update! I used the method barelylethal: shitass described, and as far as I can tell, the procedure was a success! =D
