I was in the middle of telling a story to Mr. Zbornak and it went off the rails when he said:
Him: You're such a cracker. (he's not white, I am)
Me: Excuse me? That's not cool.
Me: Calling me a cracker.
Him: What's the big deal? It's not like it's a bad word.
Me: Um, do you know the background on that word?
Him: What do you mean?
Me: It's a reference to white foremen on plantations during the time of slavery.
Him: I don't get it...
Me: Uh, the sound of a whip? Crack? Cracker?
Him: Oh my god! I thought it just meant boring and white, like a saltine cracker!
I could not stop laughing. I think I might start using the word in that context.
