A pregnant woman had a stroke and was rendered brain dead. Doctors detected the heartbeats from the twin fetuses and kept the mother alive in a vegetative state for four months until the babies could be delivered by cesarean. 

Now on one hand, I can imagine without hesitation that this mother or any mother would’ve wanted nothing less. But there’s also something so uncomfortable about a male medic caressing an unconscious woman’s pregnant belly, even with the best of intentions. Or maybe it’s because the whole thing sounds like a propagandistic anecdote Aunt Lydia would tell a classroom of handmaids as an aspiration tale.
