Last year, Green Acres Hutterite Colony near Brandon, Manitoba sponsored a family of Syrian refugees. This video from UNHCR checks in with them.

The Hutterites are an Anabaptist sect of Christianity, related to the Mennonites and the Amish. What distinguishes the Hutterites is that communities, known as colonies hold their property communally, and the needs of the families are met with community resources.

Three quarters of the world’s Hutterites live in western Canada, with most of the others living in the United States, though colonies have been established in random places like Japan and Nigeria.

Just in case anyone has ever heard the western Canadian urban myth, the Hutterites absolutely do not hire blond haired-blue eyed men to serve as studs for the women. Don’t know where this ridiculous story came from. It’s like someone noticed they speak a dialect of German, and decided they were running their own Lebensborn program.
