Since people seemed into the idea of doing a film club where we focus on watching films made by women of color, I wanted to throw a few ideas out for what our first movie could be. Someone suggested doing it soon so that people could watch a film this weekend, as a way to cope with the imminent end of the world. How about we pick one by Friday, and put the discussion post up on Sunday 29th?

Here are some titles that are on Netflix right now, with links to their IMDB pages:

Trapped dir. Dawn Porter

13th dir. Ava DuVernay

Pariah dir. Dee Rees

Mississippi Damned dir. Tina Mabry

Middle of Nowhere dir. Ava DuVernay

These are to get the ball rolling. In future months I’d love to get suggestions and vote, the way we do with book club, but for now maybe let’s choose by saying which film you want to watch in the comments.

Something I wanted to bring up. These are all films made by Black women. I am not a Black woman. I’m a white/Latina woman with a film studies degree and while I can lead a discussion from a cinematic point of view, I’m obviously not the person best qualified to lead a discussion about race in any of the above choices. Would anybody like to either take the lead or share posting responsibilities on this?
