Basically any yarn people - I need some advice!

My mom and I are going to start knitting for Carry The Future. They’re an organization that collects diapers, baby carriers, and general baby needs for babies in refugee camps. They’re currently asking for handmade (i.e. knitted, crocheted, or sewn) baby toys, blankets, hats, sweaters and scarves.

I’ve never crocheted before, but I’ve knitted and found patterns that look doable enough. But my concern is yarn - I want to get something soft enough for a baby blanket, but is also sturdy. Hand wash and lay flat to dry seems laughable in this context. The pattern I landed on recommended Bernat Softee but that’s hand-wash - do any of you know a good alternative?
