Full disclosure: I’ll be 60 in 2 weeks. However..... I’m skeered of health insurance and I feel like a baby.

I am retiring in May and because it’s too early for me to get medicare, I need insurance for 5 years. I can continue my workplace’s insurance but it would cost around $900 a month, and that is at this year’s rate. My benefits manager — who is a great woman who I trust — assures me that I can do much better for the same benefits through the exchanges. I don’t even know what to look for and I don’t really understand how the ACA works, even though of course I am in favor of it existing. I’m most afraid of being dropped if I become ill — 60-65 are prime years for developing serious conditions but benefits manager says that that isn’t possible under ACA?

Have any of you GTers gone through the NYS exchange, or do you know of any simple websites or articles that could help me figure this out?
