Re: people freaking out over Bieber’s ridiculous coat

Yes, he looks ridiculous. Yes, it is not necessary to have when its like 60 degrees outside. Yes, he absolutely did it to be shocking and for attention, and it worked.

I do wonder though when wearing fur became a general social faux pas. It’s not like our culture is completely vegetarian and won’t use leather or eat meat. To be honest, I don’t see much of a difference between leather and fur. But as a culture we seem to be very uncomfortable with one and not the other. Leather shoes abound, but heaven help the company that dare uses real fur on a coat hood.

I inherited some furs from my husband’s family and I have to say, that shit is ~warm~. It feels weird to wear, but when it’s freezing outside honestly his grandma’s ancient sheepskin coat is warmer than any amount of fancy Columbia jacket layers I put on. I don’t have strong feelings either way, but I’m curious at what other people think, especially about the cultural disconnect between being okay with animal hide and animal meat, but not animal fur as a culture.
