I have a boss who starts every conversation off with some weird saying. The other day, he called me and when I picked up, all I heard was "Virginia, you know what they say about how you can't put the corn back in the can after it's been cooked?" Um, nope. Not really sure what they say, but my guess is you're saying that something's fucked and its too late to fix it.
My boss got me thinking about sayings we say and why we say them. I've noticed that many sayings, like "if I had my druthers," are regional, but others are so obscure that I think they must just be a family saying. My family never really used "fancy" talk ... if something didn't matter, then we would just say "same difference," rather than "six of one, half a dozen of the other." Because of that, I feel like I'm always hearing a new saying. Sometimes I ask what it means. Sometimes I pretend I know. Sometimes I look it up.
So what phrases do you say or enjoy? Where did you pick them up or hear them?
