You guys, I desperately want to move back to the Northeast to be closer to my family, and although I think I'd love to live in NYC, my partner and I want to start a family in the next few years and I'm incredibly daunted by the prospect of raising kids in New York, given that we currently make around $80K combined (although that figure would almost certainly (hopefully) go up, as we live in Austin now). I've grown accustomed to city living and don't want to move to the 'burbs, which is where I grew up. Can anybody either a) reassure me that it's possible and not insane to raise a family in NYC, or b) recommend other Northeastern cities that are good for raising kids on a more modest income? I like Philadelphia and DC all right, but I'd like to widen my net and/or hear from those with anecdotal data.
