My mother got a bunch of cds at a yard sale it was collection of 50s and 60s era songs. One cd has the Diana Ross and The Supremes song Love Child. Its been decades since I heard it but the melody and lyrics stayed with me. Its Diana Ross’s best performed song and for me at least this song defines her. The lyrics are heartrenching.

Yet its so good I have not heard the phrase love child since the 80s. Its gone like original meaning of bastard, secret child, and worse illegitimate child. They are children nothing more or less. These phrases just stigmatized children. Hopefully out of wedlock will soon be gone, it is pretty much.

If you never heard the song you need to. Its a splice of an era although much of the lyrics still hold true today and its still powerful and beautiful. With Black Lives Matter movement these songs lyrics could easily be used today. Tweak the lyrics by putting in black instead of love and tragically this song would have resonance.
