I don't know what it is about me, but I seem to be a magnet for cats with health problems. I lost my first cat, a stray I rehabilitated, to kidney failure (which was sadly not caught before it was too late). My cat Shiloh has colitis, the cause of which the vet can't seem to pinpoint (but I am treating as if it were kitty Crohn's Disease, with limited success). And, tragically, I lost a kitten late last year to the heartbreak known as FIP.

Over the past couple of days, I've noticed my kitten River developing a slightly swollen abdomen. And I am freaking out. That was the first sign I got that Zook, the cat I lost to FIP, was sick. I called the vet today, and they can't get me in until the week after next (it's a very busy practice; my vet's the best in the area). I am hoping that it's just worms, since we did just have a flea outbreak (fleas carry tapeworms). And she isn't acting out of the ordinary at all—her appetite and energy levels are both great, unlike Zook's were when he got sick.

But I feel like hoping for the best is deluding myself. And I don't think I'm up to dealing with another case of FIP again. It wrecked me the first time around. Having to watch a young kitten deteriorate, with the knowledge that there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it is incredibly hard.

So, yeah. Hugs, advice, etc...send 'em my way.

ETA: For some reason, Kinja's hiding my responses in the threads on this post, so that they're visible through notifications but not on the full page itself—almost like I'm banned from my own post. I'm probably going to try not to comment a lot because of this, but I will try to respond as best as I'm able. Thanks, guys!
