I want to say something like "trailblazing" or "groundbreaking" but don't want to use those words. Like "setting a new ____".

Here's the sentence:

"Hearing this made me realize that simply choosing to attend college was ______" I'd like to say something along the lines of how it was different and new and not something that is done in my family. I am just blanking out on how to say it properly.

Thanks!

Edit: Ok now I'm conflicted, there's two great sentences I could use- "Hearing this made me realize that, simply by choosing to attend college, I was breaking new ground" or "Hearing this made me realize that simply choosing to attend college was a radical departure from the paths my family usually choose to take."
