The murder trial of Michael Gero, a man accused of murdering his girlfriend Sherri Thomas, has come to an unexpected end after the Prosecutor asked for a stay to the proceeding right before closing arguments were due to start
Prosecutor Jacques Dagenais, informed the judge that he had no argument to make and that he no longer believes that Gero killed Thomas. According to Gero, he found Thomas on the floor of their apartment after she had shot herself in the head. Gero did plead guilty to 2 gun related offences, as he was not permitted to own a gun due to his convinction for armed robbery.
Apparently this will put the murder charge on hold for up to a year, unless new evidence emerges.
(If any of the legal matters aroun do this case sound odd, it may be because Quebec uses the Civil Code rather than the Common Law.)
