Are you there, Hivemind? It's me, Fishnets.

It's July 1st and I'm kinda freaking out a bit right now because if all goes according to plan, I'll be moving into my first real apartment next month.

Right now I live with good ol' Mom and Dad, and have been doing so in the year since I graduated college. In college I always lived on campus, though one year I was more in an apartment rather than a dorm room. The result is that this is the first time I'm going to be living on my own.

I'm not too concerned with what happens once I get to said place (got what seems to be a good roommate situation lined up), but I'm more concerned with HOW DO I FIND SAID PLACE? My folks are being super helpful, and my future roommate is trying in his own way (though he's in a really intense program at Columbia right now/has less of an idea how to do any of this than me). We may use a broker if we can find a good one, we may just go it on our own.

We also do know what neighborhoods we want to look in (mostly BK because that's what we can afford) and I know what neighborhoods I want to avoid. But as far as everything else, I'm kinda in the dark here.

So does anyone have any advice for apartment hunting? Dealing with a first apartment? Signing leases? Guarantors (in his case) and showing proof of employment (in mine)? Anyone have suggestions for what neighborhoods to look at (we're looking at something in the $1400-$1600 range, 2 br)? Stuff we should be wary of? Anyone have any good gifs?
