A friend directly just asked me to sponsor her to sleep in our city's cathedral overnight to help homeless people. I have a massive aversion to charity projects which just seem to be an excuse to do something fun, and I have never seen this friend actually at any of the charity sessions in the organisation I help run, which directly works with the homeless, elderly, and children in poverty.

Also I am poor.

How do I say no without upsetting her?! I haven't clicked the FB message yet, but I can't avoid her for long!

EDIT: What do you guys think of 'Hi __, it's really great that you're doing this and I'd love to help, I just don't think I'm in a financial situation to help in this way at the moment. I'm still working at ___ if you ever want to help out there, and I wish you the best of luck in finding more sponsors. Thanks for helping out with such an important issue!

EDIT: Oh god, she just replied with 'if I don't meet my sponsorship target I won't be allowed to do it. Surely you can spare a little? It is charity.'

I think I might just ignore it. Bad idea?
