She is most famous for the 1931 Spanish version of Dracula, which was filmed on the same sets as the Bela Lugosi version, and has been called by some better than the more well-known version.
She married the film's producer, Paul Kohner, and they stayed together until his death. Their daughter Susan starred in Imitation of Life, and her grandsons are the Weitz brothers of American Pie fame.
