My local humane society tipped me off to a cool phone app that donates to a shelter of your choice for every mile you walk with your dog! Walk for a Dog. I signed up for it (but not for my local shelter... shhh!) and hope to start using it today! It's available for iPhone or Android and the app is free.
You put in a little info about your dog(s) and just start the app whenever you leave for your walks. It tracks how far you walk and can be set to auto-save the walk if you're not moving for a certain amount of time. There were a ton of shelters listed by state. I picked my hometown shelter in honor of my childhood dog who was adopted from there and passed 2 years ago. It doesn't look like the shelter will get a ton from it, but walking the dog is something I do anyway.
From the FAQ:
Our donations to animal organizations are funded by sponsorship, advertising, and investors. We send donations to active shelters and rescues about three times per year.
The more people walking for their selected rescue or shelter, the more we can donate. Every walk counts—whether it's around the block or a 10 mile hike. The more walks you take with the app, the greater the benefit for your favorite rescue or shelter.
Our past donations have ranged from 11 cents to 25 cents per mile depending on the number of walkers for an organization. The more people walking the more we can donate.
What if I don't have a dog? Can I still use the app? Absolutely! You can walk for dogs at a shelter or rescue by choosing the "Walk for Cassie" option after enrolling in the app for the first time. Or, create your dream dog as a walking companion by going to the setup tab and adding a dog.
