[Update Begins] Everyone, thanks so much for your thoughts. It’s over. Dad died 4 months to the day after Mom.

I was able to fly down on Tuesday afternoon, and by 8:15 PM at was the Hospice center. He was not really there; seriously medicated for pain. He passed, peacefully, at 3:30 this afternoon, after a short battle with breath. So I got to spend the night at the Hospice with him, and I noticed when his breath started to change and got everyone to the room before he died. Then we sat around and talked about his life, what he did for each of us. We’re waiting now for my oldest niece to arrive from Boston, and then we’re going back to the Hospice to drink a bottle of wine and say goodbye.[Update Ends]

Dad’s time is about up. On Sunday he had a lot of air in his stomach, so they put in a tube to let it out, and he felt better. Then he didn’t, and liquid started coming up. He has an intestinal blockage that would require surgery, and he’s not going to put up with that.

No trip to Washington, no trip to Switzerland.

So the family is gathering to say farewell. After Wednesday, he’ll be so heavily medicated for pain that he won’t know any of us. But tomorrow, I and three of my four kids, and my brother, and both of his, will be with him.

You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.
