A teacher in Ottawa, ON has been sent home pending the outcome of an investigation, after he decided to give one of his students a haircut. The mother of the student says that the teacher had been calling her repeatedly to complain that her son’s hair was always in his eyes, that he was chewing on it and to request that he get a haircut. When the mother asked the boy he said he did not want haircut, so she left it at that.
Then a few days ago, the teacher called her shortly before the end of the school day, telling her that he had cut her son’s hair after the boy gave him permission to do so.
The school board has issued a public apology to the family.
I can’t imagine what the teacher was thinking. Overriding a parent’s decision regarding their child is pretty much never going to end well (barring an extreme situation with the involvement of child protection officials).
