So, I'm pretty speechless about the whole thing. Dr. Danielle Lee writes a blog called "Urban Scientist" for Scientific American. Apparently, Biology Online liked her work, so did what any one would do ... asked her to work for them. For free, of course. (Duh, why pay for good work?) Dr. Lee politely declined their offer of all work and no pay, to which they responded, "Are you an urban scientist or an urban whore?" And that's not even the end of the story! When she blogged about the experience, Scientific American disappeared the blog post.

I just ... I don't ... I can't even begin. How many different ways is this woman's experience going to be marginalized? The asshole at Biology Online who originally called her a whore deserves wrath equal to the heat of 1,000 suns no doubt, but Scientific American, which has provided Dr. Lee a space to blog about the experience of being an urban scientist shouldn't then erase this evidence of the very real difficulties faced by WOC who try to create careers for themselves in science.
