A story close to my heart. Women are farmers and always have been, but they haven't been counted as such because they were encouraged to list the husband as the head of household and business owner.

As I start my farm in full force, I am applying for both federal and state assistance that is available to help farms make improvements. It is usually geared towards beginning farmers, but on the federal level there is also assistance if you are of a disadvantaged class - a woman or minority. I have been trying to figure out if I should apply for assistance jointly with my husband or alone, and the folks I am working with are being totally unhelpful. They won't tell me what the actual advantage is that you get if you are a woman farmer, and it isn't documented anywhere that I can find. I wonder if the personal views of the people administrating the program are leading them to be purposely unhelpful with this area of the application progress.
