I'm currently reading some James Baldwin for the first time, and I love his style of writing - precise, unpretentious, and clear. In general, I like prose writers who don't use a lot of poetic flourishes or ponderous metaphors - Truman Capote, Graham Greene, George Orwell (especially the essays) and Pauline Kael.

Who do you like to read just for their literary style? Conversely, whose work do you cannot stand? *cough*DanBrown*cough*
