In an extra helping of what the fuck is wrong with our world, a 12-year-old girl in Wisconsin was stabbed 19 times by two friends, also 12, who had lured her out to a wooded area with promises of a game of hide and seek. After the assault, she was able to drag herself to a road, where she was discovered by a bicyclist and transported to a hospital. Despite some of the stab wounds hitting major organs, she seems to be in stable condition (and obviously quite lucky, as well—apparently one of the stab wounds was so close to her heart that she was "a millimeter away from death").
Apparently the two 12-year-old girls who have been arrested—Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier—are thought to have been planning this murder for months. They are being held on preliminary charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. From the CNN article:
"Both suspects had a fascination with a fictitious character that often posted" to websites dealing with stories about death and horror, the police chief told reporters at a news conference.
According to the criminal complaint, the suspects had been planning the attack since February.
They first thought to kill the victim by placing duct tape over her mouth while she was sleeping and stabbing her in the neck, the complaint read.
Next, the plan was to kill her in a bathroom where there was floor drain that could make cleanup easier, it continued.
But, finally, the girls decided to do it in a park while playing a game of hide-and-seek, the complaint read.
It states: "As they left for the park ... (the victim) was walking in front of them and Geyser lifted up the left side of her while jacket and displayed the knife tucked in her waistband. Weier stated she gave Geyser a look with wide eyes and, when asked what that meant Weier stated, 'I thought, dear god, this was really happening.'"
What the actual fuck? This reminds me of some god-awful mash-up of an old Law and Order: SVU episode and Supernatural.
According to CNN, "They are being charged as adults and appeared in court Monday. Bail was set for each in the amount of $500,000..." Thoughts? I'm not sure how to feel about 12-year-olds being tried as adults. I mean, this clearly had a lot of premeditation, but it still leaves me uneasy. I'd love to hear what some of you think.
ETA: If you were waiting for Gawker to pick this up, both the Gawker mainpage and Kotaku have posted articles on it with more detail (and even pictures of the accused...don't know how I feel about that either...). I've linked for anyone who wants to read.
The Kotaku article links to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel...chilling. Disturbing. I don't even know.
