But why do people continuously defend Alec Baldwin, after he's shown his racist and heterosexist/homophobic viewpoints? Is it because he's a liberal/open democrat? Is it because he's Tina Fey's BFF? I don't understand.
Before I really became a fully active member of GT/ the Gawker Network, I remember reading some articles from womanists (i.e. Trudy from Gradient Lair) discussing a trend in "White liberalism" that can miss the point and be racist/heterosexist and exclusionary. I know prejudice knows no specific political identification, but at the time I didn't fully understand this specific focus on how "Mainstream liberalism" (liberalism for White people) could be this discriminatory. The liberals are for "us", for people like me. People whose identities comprise a multitude of oppressed social groups.
But with the constant fucking defense of Alec Baldwin, and other instances (#solidarityisforwhitewoman, the targeting of Mikki Kendall, the treatment of Janet Mock, the assumptions toward Bruce Jenner, Cis-straight male White savior Macklemore), I now fully understand what womanists like Trudy were talking about. I reread some of her articles about "White liberals" just now, and it all made perfect fucking sense. Don't talk the talk and not walk the walk. There are a lot of liberals who will serve as mouthpieces for equality, but don't really live their lives to dismantle privilege (or perpetuate the damn privilege themselves a la Alec Baldwin). The same people who criticize the justice system for failing to bring peace to Trayvon Martin's family, the same people criticizing Arizona's Jim Crow like legislation toward the LGBTQA community, the same people criticizing the racial profiling of those of Middle Eastern/Mid-Asian descent, should also be denouncing the shit out of Alec Baldwin and demanding change.
