Hey guys. Long time no talk. I haven’t been around kinja all that much since the fiasco where we thought it was disappearing. I haven’t been socializing much at all really, online or in real life, which probably isn’t that great for my mental health. Thought I should probably check back in here and see how people are doing.
I was thinking about posting last week about Warren. I was volunteering for her campaign, and her dropping out hit me hard. I cried about it for a few days. I have a lot of thoughts about the whole thing, but that’s not really what I want this post to be about. Luckily her volunteer network still has an active Slack, and it’s such a wonderful and supportive community of people. Most people are moving on to downballot fights, since most of us aren’t too into the remaining candidates (though I believe every single one of us will be Voting Blue No Matter Who in November), and I think I will be doing the same soon. I’ll list the groups I’m looking at that people there have recommended, in case others here are interested in joining the fight to flip the Senate:
All that said, at the moment, politics is pretty low on my list of concerns. We finally sold our house - we’ve been trying since September - and I was happy about it until all this coronavirus nonsense. Now I’m so stressed at the prospect of moving in the middle of all this social panic. We’re set to close the end of March, and luckily we did find a good apartment not far away, and we’re starting our new lease with a 5 day overlap before we close.
BUT. Our plan had been to call in our family and friends to help us pack up relatively quickly and easily, and hire movers for the first time in our lives instead of doing any heavy lifting ourselves. I was so looking forward to making the move easy.
Bearddamnheroes has other ideas. He’s in FULL BLOWN PANIC mode about the virus. To be fair, he’s a risk group - he has asthma and frequently ends up with respiratory issues even from colds. I’ve conceded that we should stay home as much as possible, do all our packing ourselves, avoid seeing friends and family, but I tried to argue that we should still hire movers. We can talk to them about making sure they’re disinfecting their hands, that they’re all well, and then we can disinfect all the furniture they’ve touched at the other end.
We had a giant blow out fight about it this morning. He angrily sent a text to our friend who works for a moving company, asking if his company can help us move. But he’s beyond pissed at me about it. I don’t know if I did the right thing pushing him over it.
I don’t have my head in the sand - I’ve been reading up on everything, and all the medical advice is that asymptomatic people are not spreading it, that if you are not around people coughing or sneezing (or surfaces they may have coughed or sneezed on), if you are washing your hands and not touching your face, you’re not going to get it. He doesn’t want to hear it. He says we should be doing absolutely everything within our control to not get it, which means not dealing with anyone or leaving the house unless absolutely necessary.
How about you guys? Having any big fights about coronavirus safety and panic? Crying about the state of politics? The possible silver lining with the government’s massive mishandling of the situation is that trump seems to finally be losing some supporters.
