One of the perks of my new job is a (mostly) free membership to the local YMCA, and I signed up to get a membership as soon as I heard about it as I've always been too broke to join a gym. I've since gotten my card and a tour of the facility, so I can start working out as soon as I'm ready. However, I'm kind of nervous. I've never been to a gym as an independent adult — I've only really worked out as a student at the campus rec center. I'm really worried people are going to judge me (I *am* kind of overweight) or that I'll look like an idiot trying to figure out the equipment. Any advice on how to get over gym jitters? I really do want to exercise and try to get in shape, but I'm feeling really self-conscious.
