Al-Jazeera’s Investigative Unit has uncovered evidence that communal violence in Burma/Myanmar (Al-Jazeera is using Myanmar, I will be using Burma) by majority Buddhists again the minority Muslim Rohingya has not been spontaneous, but rather has been planned:
“Exclusive evidence obtained by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit and Fortify Rights reveals the government has been triggering communal violence for political gain by inciting anti-Muslim riots, using hate speech to stoke fear among the Myanmarese about Muslims, and offering money to hardline Buddhist groups who threw their support behind the leadership.”
Apparently Buddhists have been bused to Rohingya communities, and provided with meals and refreshments so as to help expedite things.
Burma has been transitioning from military dictatorship to democracy since 2010, and will be holding its first free elections this year. Al Jazeera has been reporting that political parties have been deliberately excluding Muslim candidates, in an attempt to appease hardline Buddhists.
