If you want to be drawn into an amazing tale about a land and culture as unlike ours as anything I’ve read, populated by people of all races, and with the best world-building and story I’ve come across in ages, pick up “The Fifth Season” by N. K. Jemisin (I know a few of you are, like me, trying to read more books by women and PoC, so I’ll add that the author is both of these).
It honestly blew me away. It grabbed me from the beginning, even if the three interwoven story lines plopped you right in the middle of things so that you aren’t sure exactly what’s happening and don’t know how they’re connected for quite a while. It’s the first in a trilogy, and I’ll be waiting anxiously for the next few years until I find out how everything plays out.
I started it yesterday, read till 2 am, and picked it right up again first thing this morning. I haven’t come across a true ‘can’t put it down’ book like this in a long time. As soon as I was done, I wanted to start again from the beginning. Read it!
ETA: I will also add that the book also features main characters from all over the LGBQT spectrum as well. In this world, though, it’s only worth noting in the same sense that you’d write about the colour of someone’s eyes. There’s never any sense of judgement or otherness about it.
