An appearance by Feminist Frequency creator Anita Sarkeesian at Utah State University scheduled for Wednesday, October 15 has been cancelled after the university received an anonymous terror threat Tuesday morning.
Sarkeesian chose to cancel the event after being informed by police and the university that weapons would be allowed at the event with a valid permit.
In the email, the sender claims to have access to "a semi-automatic rifle, multiple pistols, and a collection of pipe bombs." The sender, who claims to be a student, specifically threatens feminists on campus, writing that "feminists have ruined my life." He also cites the Montreal Massacre as a model for his threats and calls Marc Lepine "a hero to men everywhere."
Unsurprisingly, this comes at the heels of rising hostility and threats against female game developers and critics from the #Gamergate movement. Earlier this summer, Anita Sarkeesian was driven out of her home by online threats.
This case is a clear-cut example of how the misogynistic elements in game culture are literally silencing women. They are trying to shut women out of game development, game criticism and academic discussions of game culture. They are instilling terror in women and their allies in the industry to shut them up and shut them out.
This is a toxic movement that can't be dismissed as just a bunch of lonely losers trolling on the internet because they have nothing better to do. They have threatened women with violence, rape and death. It's time for law enforcement to take these threats of terrorism seriously and to shut them down.
