Ankle Weakness

No, really.

About every 6 months I turn my ankle from walking on uneven ground and have to wear a brace for a week or two while the swelling goes down. I know there are ankle exercises I can do while strength-training, but those are vertical exercises and my ankles always turn sideways, and ouch! It is painful to walk on.

Anyone have any other remedies to strengthen them?
