What is it with old white british dudes dismissing childhood sexual abuse as nothing? First it was Richard Dawkins - and now Stephen Fry.
[...] it might trigger something when you were young that upset you once, because uncle touched you in a nasty place, well I’m sorry.
“It’s a great shame and we’re all very sorry that your uncle touched you in that nasty place – you get some of my sympathy – but your self pity gets none of my sympathy.”
He added, “Self pity is the ugliest emotion in humanity. Get rid of it, because no one’s going to like you if you feel sorry for yourself. The irony is we’ll feel sorry for you, if you stop feeling sorry for yourself. Grow up.”
Fuck you Fry. I’ve lost a tremendous amount of respect for you. Way to throw people like me under the fucking bus to prove some bullshit point about trigger warnings. It’s ok to talk at length about how depression has impacted your life, of how being gay has - but fuck those kids that were molested having trouble, right?
I wonder how much of it is because of how common religious childhood sexual abuse is - and how prevalent the church was in the UK a few decades ago. So it was something that happened to tons of people and toxic masculinity means they aren’t allowed to feel emotions or impacts from it. It was a rite of passage, not something inherently damaging to them.
Which isn’t an excuse.. because seriously fuck them. Everytime they say shit like this another abuse victim understands that they will never be taken seriously. They will be told to grow up, and to stop impugning the characters of those that abused them.
No one is coming for your words assholes. All people want is some fucking warning before you start talking about rape and child abuse.
