My family has already made me cry today. My parents are visiting my brother's family. He has a history of bipolar disorder, but has been pretty (for him) stable as of late. Visits are still always a toss-up, though, because his wife is difficult and the atmosphere is usually kind of awkward.
I start getting texts from my mom this morning "Call me", "Things aren't good here", "He's drinking already and pacing, blaming things on the Jews". I'm texting back, "Wow, that's early. Are you sure he's not just joking?" (my brother is also a big joker), "Is he okay??". Then, it seems, he has gotten ahold of her phone "It's me. I'm fine". I text back, "Okay, good, are you sure, mom seems worried." I'm panicked thinking this is nuts, is he going to be so mad that she was texting me about him? Then I get a text, apparently from my mom again, "Call me right now please"
I call. "He's drinking Scotch, walking around and saying 'This is a celebration, Fuck the Jews' and all other kinds of crazy things. We're really upset. We don't know what to do. We think we need to call a hospital. Dad wants to leave."
I'm like, "Are you serious? Oh my gosh. Where are the kids, where is K—-?"
"She's at work, we sent them out to play. Dad is in the car. He wants to go right now."
"Mom. You cannot leave the kids with him if he's like this. Wait for her to get home. This is nuts."
"Dad wants to go right now."
"YOU CANNOT GO RIGHT NOW, PUT HIM ON THE PHONE I WANT TO TALK TO HIM, PLEASE!"
"Just joking! This is just a joke! HAHAHAHAHA!"
I immediately burst into tears. I was so fucking scared. They put him on the phone and he's laughing, saying he can't believe I fell for it, I know he's not Anti-Semitic. I'm sobbing saying "Oh my God, I was so worried!" and cried for about 3 minutes out of relief.
So yeah. That's my family. Happy Saturday.
