I'm writing a term paper about (in part) the selective nature of the narrative of mestizaje in Latin America. I have lots of sources, but a lot of them are academic, so I was wondering if anyone on GT had experience with it and how it impacted your lives?
My argument, I think, is going to be that the exclusive nature of mestizaje led to a lack of buy-in amongst indigenous populations and its legacy precludes the creation of more inclusive narratives today in that it upheld stereotypical and negative views of indigenous people while simultaneously enforcing that Latin American countries did not "have a race problem." Am I way off-base here?
Note: I know that Latin America and conceptions of mestizaje are incredibly diverse. I'm thinking I'll probably focus in on Brazil and Peru.
