If you have HBO, I highly recommend watching Atomic Homefront. It’s about the radioactive waste all over North St. Louis County and the West Lake Landfill (which also has underground fires, but don’t worry!).
Knowing everything I already do about these landfills and that waste, I’m still low-level panicking watching the documentary because of how it’s associating various pieces of information.
Y’all I can see that landfill from the northeastern conference rooms in my work building. It’s not that far. It’s very close to waaaay too many people’s homes.
The EPA has started “cleanup” activities at the Westlake Landfill recently. Not really sure what good that will do, since they’re only going like 15 feet deep and only in some parts.
