Last night my son called me from his dad's house. I was pleased because he rarely calls me for anything other than permission to buy something with his allowance or to ask to come home from school early, but he just wanted to chat "before Mother's Day." He asked about my day and then let it slip that there was a brunch happening on Sunday (today). Apparently it's supposed to be a surprise, but I'm grateful to know because the last time I was surprised with brunch I hadn't showered in two days and was still in my pj's when the ex showed up with our son and flowers.
On Mother's Days when my son has been at my house, we have made our own celebration by me taking us out to lunch or dinner, or the wee mommet giving me whatever gift he made at school. One year he got ambitious and gave me breakfast in bed: Ketchup sandwiched between two slices of American cheese. I had to eat the whole thing under his watchful gaze. Yum.
What was your best/worst birthday/Mother's Day/Christmas surprise?
ETA: My good surprise this morning is that apparently there is no brunch! Maybe for step-mom, but I'm free until dinner. Then we are having dim sum. Good things all around.
