Now Nye is using science to argue for women’s reproductive rights. Nye appears in a Big Think video called “Can We Stop Telling Women What to Do with Their Bodies?” Nye’s argument — that anti-choice legislature is outdated and runs against scientific facts — is aimed squarely towards those members of Congress who seek to de-fund Planned Parenthood based upon religious beliefs.
Nye explains how more eggs get fertilized than attach to the uterine wall. He says this runs against the belief that a fertilized egg has the same rights of an individual, for many eggs never implant and develop into a fetus. To this end, Nye asserts that lawmakers should not control women’s wombs based upon the belief that life begins at conception:
“It’s just a reflection of deep scientific understanding, and you literally or apparently literally do not know what you’re talking about. And so when it comes to women’s rights when it comes to their reproduction, I think you really should leave it to women.”
