I've been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks but was reminded by the summer reading post a little bit ago. I'm about to undertake the launch of a guerilla-style neighborhood book club in my Brooklyn neighborhood. Think flyers posted with a suggested meeting time and first book. I really want to read a variety of books that aren't overtly theoretical but have some feminist, intersectional, or LGBTQ themes that will make for good conversation. Anyone have any suggestions? This post can also double as a groupthink summer reading list if people are interested in that kind of thing.
So far the ideas I have (and books that are on my personal reading list) are:
White Teeth by Zadie Smith
That Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Adichie
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
The Awakening by Kate Chopin
