I am a descendent of the Black Loyalists who settled in the Annapolis and Halifax regions. Loyalists were a mixed group of Americans who allied with the British forces during the (one of your many) revolution to abolish the British State. Among the soldiers were Black Americans lured by the promise of land and the opportunity to flee slavers.

What was promised to anyone siding the with British was 100 acres, plus more if there were more family members to provide for. Obviously, that proved difficult once the time came and some only received an acre while others received nothing (a few reverting to servitude to get by). None the less the Black Loyalists settled in Nova Scotia and built communities for themselves and paved the way for future generations.
