Because of course she’s playing a queen.

In the comics, Ramonda is T’Challa’s closest advisor and T’Chaka’s wife.

They seem to be keeping that for the movie.

- Nakia, played by (Actual Goddess) Lupita Nyong’o.

The comics version is Problematic(tm). She was a teenage member of the Dora Milaje who had a crush on T’Challa. T’Challa had made it clear that he never intended to pursue any of the Dora Milaje romantically, which broke with tradition. After a misunderstanding, Nakia’s infatuation embiggened and she tried to kill Monica Lynne, T’Challa’s significant other.

In the movie, Nakia is a bad ass globe-trotting spy for Wakanda, sans any homicidal bunny boiler qualities hopefully.

The scene stealing member of the Dora Milaje from Civil War.

In the comics, she is in a relationship with Aneka. Aneka was sentenced to death for killing a rapist chieftan. Ayo busted her out using advanced tech and they used that advanced tech to help Wakandan citizens as the Midnight Angels.
