Hey GT! You may (or may not) have noticed that I've been mostly absent for several weeks. I've been preparing for my preliminary exam for PhD candidacy- and today I passed!
The caveat is that my PhD advisor wants me to think about whether a PhD is what's ultimately right for me- it's become clear that I'm losing the passion I once had for research and as a consequence have been slow in developing independence as a scientist. On the other hand, I've independently applied for and received a grant to develop outreach activities for middle schoolers, and have independently designed a syllabus for a course I hope to teach next spring. It's clear I'm passionate about education. So he wants me to think about whether going through another 3 or 4 years to get a PhD when I feel lukewarm about research is really what's best for me compared to other options. Lots of soul-searching and option-considering to do.
But for now...celebrate with me! And tell me how you've all been doing lately! Any good news?
