There is a good article about women fiction detectives and features 5 novels article. I have read none so I though I would give my list.
1) Amelia Peabody by the late Elizabeth Peters. Spanning about 30 years from 1890 to 1920 features the start of English digging a lot in Egypt and for Amelia solving crimes. Her husband always seemed to be on the verge of tears. Funny without being stupid ie Stephanie Plum.
2) Anita Blake by Laurell Hamilton. First 9 books are excellent then it gets so boring. Richard though is still the whiniest character ever in any series.
3) Carlotta Carlyle by Linda Barnes. A taxi driver/private eye. I really enjoyed this fun books. Lots of odd characters.
