I was just at the dog park letting my two boys run off some steam. Our big boy, Mickey, was wandering around making friends with the humans and mostly ignoring the other dogs as usual. Mickey loves people. He’s the kindest, sweetest, gentlest canine soul I’ve ever known. If he doesn’t immediately love a new person, which is rare, I’ve learned there’s always a reason. At the park today, he suddenly stopped next to this guy -just some dude standing there texting- bristled, then started backing away and barking fearfully. I’ve never seen him react so strongly to anyone, and the dude wasn’t doing a thing to provoke it. I called Mickey to me and he came over barking and cowering the whole time. I looked up to apologize to the guy and saw him sneering at me as he walked off. That’s when I noticed it: the Blue Lives Matter shirt with “Breathe easy Respect the law” emblazoned across his torso. Dogs just know.
