Don't Go There, Feminism.

Please tell me I'm not the only person who is terrified by the line of thinking this article presents. Someone linked this to me earlier and I can't get it out of my head.

There is a lot in there that sounds innocuous and easy to agree with, but whoa. She starts off terribly:

"I'm defining that as an attraction to self-defined men, women, transsexuals and the ambi-gendered, excluding noone apart from wankers, pro-life campaigners and people I just don't fancy."

Trans people are not women or men? Some kind of third thing? This is not a good start.

So then she goes into some things about the feelings bisexuals have about erasure, so far I'm on board. An example of a man who didn't realize being bisexual was possible just after the Stonewall uprising in the early 70's. Okay, still on board.

"Monosexuality was a useful generational rhetoric for similar reasons to those which made political lesbianism a fantastically useful concept for second-wave feminism – but the rigidity of such categories is no longer useful to contemporary gender politics."

Wait, wtf did she just say? The rigidity of lesbian as a category is no longer useful? I'm not sure I like where she is going with this. Where is she going with this?

"Now that I'm older and arguably wiser, I've come to see desiring men, women and others as a choice as well as a compulsion. It's about challenging the rotten trench of binary thinking that runs through contemporary thought,"

Uh oh. She thinks bisexuality is a political choice.. Are you trying to say that bisexuality is the proper way to be feminist? Whoa though, dude. The 'rotten trench of binary thinking'? Really?

"Bisexuality is important as a way of thinking as well as a fun way of getting your rocks off, and as its language becomes more widely used it will be increasingly useful to contemporary feminism. Fourth-wave feminism encompasses a gender egalitarianism which rejects the notion of antagonistic binaries."

Oh god, you are saying that. I really hope fourth wave feminism isn't going to view lesbian identity as an 'antagonistic binary'. Please tell me fourth wave feminism isn't going to start being homophobic for new different reasons.

She quotes Kinsey here too:

"The world is not to be divided into sheep and goats. Not all things are black nor all things white."

Let s remember that while not everyone will be a sheep or a goat, there will always be sheep and goats running around. If you are going to claim the binary should be non-existent and that lesbian identity is 'no longer useful' and 'antagonistic' and 'a rotten trench', I don't know why one would use a scale like Kinsey's to defend that point. The scale has ends. It's a binary scale.

Lets not allow feminism to come to these thoughts. I worry, I really do.
