I'm meeting with a researcher at my university tomorrow to go over possible topics for a research project if I end up working with him this summer (which I really really want to do). His work is an area that I'm really interested in and I really want to break into it and gain skills and all. I'm hoping that this project will turn into my practicum and thesis.

So my question is, how do I not sound like an idiot? I know a bit about his area of research but really just the general stuff. A lot of it is way above my scope of knowledge at the moment. I really want to learn more but I don't know how to approach this. Should I be honest and let him know that I don't know all that much but am willing to learn? Do I read all of his recent publications before I go so I sound more knowledgeable? I've never met this particular researcher so I'm not sure what the best way to approach this would be.

Help!

EDIT: Just wanted to thank everyone for the helpful responses! I'm also studying for an exam and writing a paper so I don't have time right now to respond individually. I'll let you all know how it went tomorrow.
