Welcome To The Bitchery

English teachers or grammar cops please explain

I came across this word twere. A cool word and I thought short for “there were” but its really short for “it were”. How? It is a single noun which goes with was not were. For example “it was dreary outside” Not “It were dreary outside” is wrong. So how is twere ever acceptable. I could see twas which is an archiac term that oddly with the internet never came back since folks love shortening things.
