I bought my new man what I thought was a first edition of a book from Abe's but when I received it said it was the 31st printing. The original date of publication was '43 and the 31st printing was in '66.
Knowing absolutely nothing about first editions or how to identify them (although I did some research before buying), I contacted the seller. He said that FIRST editions are going for around $7K and that the 31st is still a great....I don't know...version, to have. I paid $100 for it. He's willing to take it back, but I thought I would ask more educated folks about whether this makes any kind of decent gift.
It's...wait for it...THE FOUNTAINHEAD. Okay, you can't choose who you love and it's not like it's MY favorite book.
Should I still give it to him or send it back??
